Information - 20m propagation from 3D2
If you live in
Southern EU countries, your path to the Pacific is better than hams who live in
Northern EU
Countries who faired very well with cdx (long & short path) were
Italy, Greece, Croatia, Israel and suprisingly - Austria.
Countries also within
central Europe such as Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Switzerland, Hungary,
Yugoslavia, Slovenia also did well.
Countries
who cdx were very difficult (long & short path) UK, Holland, Belgium,
although the Scandinavian countries seemed to do ok.
The path
opens at nearly the same time every day. Before 05.00z the cdx are very quiet
around the Pacific area on HF. You could hear the odd station on one of the
other pacific islands, but generally it's very quiet.
Around 05.00z for some reason a few
French stations appeared, then from 05.00-06.00z I was working
USA/South
America/Central America, plus the cdx from other VK states, ZL and JA were
improving all the time.
At around
06.00 saw some of the EU long path signals building mainly from southern EU
countries.
The cdx would build and below is an extract from the OC-121 log at
06.00z, showing the diverse range of countries.

From around 07.00z you could clearly hear the "Multipathing" echo effect in full swing with both long and short paths open together. Stations from DL,F,ON,LA,SM,OH and the occassional G would appear from 08.00 onwards. As time progressed stations further north and west and especially from EA and CT would show at around 08.30z and some good signals from EA8 at around 09.30z. Generally the long path would open only for about 1 hour max, the short path would continue to open until approx 10.30z - then over a period of only a few minutes the band would close and stations would drop out very quickly. Noise levels were variable - no man made stuff, only "Sun" noise as you could hear the increase in the period leading up to the openings. From S zero at 03.00 to S3/4 at 06.00, although this level varied from day to day. I remember 1 day at S9 background noise during a long path opening, down to S1 the next day.
On 2 days on OC-156 we had very poor/no long path cdx. On OC-137 we had a superb short path opening to G for 3 hours+ on 14/12. At sunrise time in the Pacific 20m goes quiet - there's a few US stations around, but not very strong - also 15 and 10 are dead.
